Participation in international conference “Deportation and Memory: The Ongoing Crisis of Artsakh in Oral Histories.”

On October 16-18, 2025, the international conference "Deportation and Memory: The Ongoing Crisis of Artsakh in Oral Histories" was held, which was organized by the Department of Cultural Anthropology of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the NAS RA, the Applied Anthropology Research Group, the "Hazarashen" Armenian Center for Ethnological Studies, and the French Inalco (Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales) University.

The goal of the conference was to discuss how the 2020 war, the de facto siege of Artsakh, the forced displacement of the Artsakh population that took place in September 2023 were reflected and made meaningful in the public sphere and transmitted through oral histories, as well as the politics of war, deportation, and memory formation, as well as the social and cultural consequences.

Various interesting papers were presented at the conference on art, schools, social networks as spaces of memory, social and legal issues of the Artsakh deportation, psychological consequences, and other important, current scientific topics.

Marina Galstyan from our Center presented a paper, “Youth Silence as a Strategy of Memory and Coexistence in Post-War Armenia,” in which she shared the results of a research conducted among young people in Armenia, including those displaced from Artsakh.

We would like to thank the organizers of the conference for the interesting program and the formation of an important scientific platform.
